She continued that legacy by marrying an Air Force Sergeant and later answering the call herself, serving on active duty with distinction. After 20 honorable years of military service, she retired from Columbus Air Force Base in 1999, carrying forward the values that shaped her life.

Upon settling in Tampa, Florida, she transitioned seamlessly into civilian leadership as a Director of Compliance in the legal and regulatory field. Her professionalism, discipline, and dedication quickly became hallmarks of her work.

In 2019, she joined AMVETS under the mentorship of Past Post Commander, Past Department Commander, and Past National Commander Horace Johnson. Since that time, she has risen as a respected and influential leader at every level of our organization.

Today, she serves with distinction as:

  • Post Commander

  • Director of the Post Food Bank

Sharon Davis embodies the spirit of service—steadfast, principled, and deeply committed to the mission of supporting veterans, their families, and our community. She leads not for recognition, but out of purpose. Not for position, but out of devotion to those who have worn the uniform.

PNC Horace Johnson

Past National Commander/Past Department Commander/Past Post Commander

Horace Johnson

Past National Commander Horace Johnson lived a life defined by service—service to God, to his family, to his country, and to his fellow veterans. From his early years in Cleveland, Ohio, to his distinguished 21-year career in the United States Army and Army National Guard, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant Major, Horace exemplified duty, loyalty, and sacrifice.

He carried those values far beyond his military service. Through his leadership in AMVETS, he championed the needs of veterans across the nation, always advocating with integrity, compassion, and unwavering commitment. Whether in uniform or in civilian life, Horace led with a steady hand and a generous heart.

Scripture reminds us in John 15:13, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Horace lived that truth daily. He poured himself into uplifting others, ensuring that veterans were honored, supported, and never forgotten.

As we remember him, may we honor his legacy not only with our words, but through our actions—by serving with the same devotion, loyalty, and joy that defined his remarkable life.
